Let it Rain!

“Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain.” ~ Author Unknown

I love the rain; I always have.  When Cody and I graduated from college we moved to Corpus Christi where he was from.  It nearly never rained. . . (and the way those folks drove in the rain, you can tell they have no clue what they are doing in rain.)

About a year and a half after we moved down there, I had gone to the post office for work.  It started raining. . . I just stood out there in the rain.  A huge smile across my face just soaking in each soaking drop of rain that came down from the skies.   I could have stood there in the parking lot all day but I’m sure someone would have called the police on me as I must have been crazy right?

Not crazy,  just too far removed from Rainy Days.  It was around the time that we decided to move back up here to where we went to college.  I remember telling my poor husband about how much I missed the rain and how I wanted to live where it rained.

Even now though, we go through droughts.  One of the first years we moved back up here, we had a summer drought that brought several forest fires.  In fact, for a while, one of the fires was really close to where we lived.  We still had the storage unit and moved all our special stuff to it.  But, we worried about our neighbors, our good friends, who’d lived on that land forever.  Each day we drove to work through smokey conditions.  Never again would rain be cursed- even when it’s super cold and dreary.

We had been having a dry and droughtful summer until the past few weeks.  It’s still pretty dry out there- in fact we’re under a burn ban.  But, we’ve had thunderstorms nearly every day or every other day.  Some bring lots of rain, some just a little.  But, I’ve loved each and everyone.  Summer rain always smells so good.

Baseball: Around the Bases

This year has renewed my love for baseball.  It feels much like a full circle year.

The Royals won the World Series in 1985.  It was the first time, I ever remember, my parents watching sports- other than racing.  My parents and I were all born in Kansas City.  And, of course, it was the I-70 series.  It was a big deal even if we lived in Texas.  I don’t remember the games, but I remember watching them, the excitement in the air, the fun, and the thrill of victory.

It wouldn’t be until the Spring of 1987 that there would be baseball in our home again- only it was only me watching.  If I had to guess, it began with free Astros tickets that I received for my grades.  But, I fell hook line and sinker for Baseball.  I was in love.  I would sit in my room keeping score while I  watched the Astros games on the TV with the sound turned down so I could hear the game on the radio.  I always loved the play-by-play on the radio better.  When the Astros would play late games, I could watch them after every one went to bed in the living room.

As I’ve said many times, Kansas City and Missouri have always had a special place in my heart.  When the Cardinals played the Astros- I always rooted for the Cardinals and how I enjoyed watching Ozzie Smith play.  Mind you, this is long before the TV baseball packages and Internet would bring you any game you wanted.  It was a rare instance that I could watch the Royals play on ESPN- but I always loved it.

I watched Craig Biggio, Ken Caminiti come up from the Minors, go back down, and come back up again their first year.  I remember knowing the moment that Craig Biggio would hit his first home run- I called it sitting on the edge of the couch watching the game alone in the dark one night after everyone else had gone to bed.  I collected baseball cards and even had that year’s Triple-A Astros cards.

I got see a number of great guys play.  But, now, my mom.  Gosh to have been her.  Baseball struck the women in my family.  My mom was the first.  She would go with her Uncle(s) and my Uncle (her brother) to the Kansas City A’s games.  She would get autographs from many of the greats.  Ask her about the time the Kansas City A’s beat the Yankees and you’ll see her face light up.  She, like me, had quite a baseball collection. . . But she gave them away to my cousins who used them in the bike spokes and otherwise destroyed them.

Over the next few years, I’d find any game I could to watch. . . which meant The Braves on TBS and The Cubs on WGN.  I owe so much of what and how I’ve learned baseball to Harry Carey.  Gosh, I loved to watch those Cubs games just to get to listen to him.

I would also use my computer nerd skills to keep a database that calculated the Astros baseball stats- and now, of course, the stats are readily available online.  The only books I would read were baseball autobiographies.

This was all about the time the Baseball bug bit my Grandmother who lived with us.  She and I would watch the games together.  We’d get our hopes up for the Astros but have them crushed by the Last-ros.  When I was in school and there were day games, I could count on my grandmother having the games on when I got home.  All I had to do was dart into her sitting room.

I would get to go to a number of Astros games- I tried to time my free tickets for times I could see the Cubs or the Cards play the Astros but honestly I would go anytime.  One time, I had tickets to a double header at the Astrodome.  Of course, games didn’t get rained out at the ‘dome and doubleheaders were rare.  But, it had flooded the parking lot so bad they canceled a game.  And the lucky recipient of tickets to a double header was me.  Coming back from funeral in the Ozarks, my brother came down with the Chicken pox. . . just in time for me to get them and miss the doubleheader.  To this day, I’ve never seen a doubleheader.

The older I got, the more I craved seeing the Royals playing and a glimpse of Kansas City.  When I got out of high school, we made a trip to KC and I got to see one of their games- they were having quite a winning streak and we saw them extend that streak.  We had great seats and I can’t think of any place I would have rather been.  (Talking about that game recently my mother talks about how hot it was- I don’t remember that part at all. . . I remember seeing beautiful Royals Stadium (later renamed Kaufman Stadium).  It would have also been my first outdoor baseball game.

Over the years, I’d get to watch more games.  Astros games, Rangers games, and Royals games.  I saw a Royals game with my cousin Rob one time.  Cody and I would have traveled to both Houston and Arlington to watch the Royals play here in Texas.  (Oh and I gave up on the Lastros a long, long time ago.)

When we moved into our home, Cody and I started getting the baseball package from our satellite company.  Oh great day!  I could see Royals games!

Several years ago, the Royals had a great year.  We caught them in Arlington when they played the Rangers. . . It was then I decided I had to go to KC to see them play.  I made plans to see them play the White Sox in the closing homestand.  When you stick with a team through thick and thin but see more thin that thick, you’ve got to really enjoy the good times.  Cody didn’t originally want to go so I had gotten single seats- and great seats.  Then Cody decided he wanted to go. . . so we sat up high- like the very top rows of Kaufman Stadium- It was all good.  I loved it anyway.

In the last few years though we just hadn’t made use of the baseball package as much.  We just hadn’t watched as many baseball games as we do the hockey games we get through the hockey package.  This year we decided we wouldn’t renew the baseball package.  It was after I had called and canceled that I really regretted it- realizing that I likely wouldn’t get to see any Royals games this year.  But, we were charged for the baseball package several months later.  We discussed it and decided that we’d just go ahead and keep the baseball package.

It must have been some kinda divine intervention- and not the kind to take lightly.  The Royals started the season off with a bang.  The timing was perfect as we went through our perils with adoption.  I could get away from it all in the hours of each ball game.  I could connect with the place that gives me so much peace.  I could smile, I could cheer, I could laugh, and I could be happy.  I can honestly say that the Royals helped sustain me though the dark times of this last spring and this summer.  (We, of course, did go see them play in Arlington.)

Cody knew that I needed to back to KC to find some peace and we both wanted to see these guys play- and the beautiful renovations to Kaufman Stadium that we’d been seeing on TV.  And so, our summer vacation was born.  We decided that we’d seriously consider taking our nephew Jack with us.

We “babysat” Jack one evening when his mom and grandparents had fun plans.  We decided to make fun plans of our own.  Last winter we’d taken Jack to his first hockey game and he loved it.  He’d been to one baseball game on a field trip but you can tell it wasn’t so much about the game.  We took him to see the Astros play.  It was pure joy for him and for Cody and I.  He’d lean over to Cody and I and ask us question after question about the game.  He was seeing the game without the blinders of a TV screen for the first time.  He loved the experience and it really brought back the memories of seeing the Astros play when I was around his age.

We knew we needed to take him along with us on Vacation and we did.  We scheduled the trip around five games in Kansas City- two against the Diamondbacks and three against that I-70 rivalry, the Cardinals.  And then another game in Houston.  Having him with us, renewed that childlike passion for the game within me.  Jack ate up everything he could possibly take in during those games and gave Cody and I a fresh perspective of the game.

We found ourselves rooting for Mitch Maier- one of the Royals true rookies.  I’d really enjoyed watching him play before we went to KC and we all hoped we’d see his first “thingie” as we called it. . . you know that trip around the bases. . . we couldn’t say it as we didn’t want to jinx him. . . Though he still hasn’t hit one this year.  (I still find myself wondering in each of his at bats if it’ll be the one.)

I also picked up the book “Heart of the Game” and recently finished it.  I really enjoyed the look into the minors.  I know find myself watching how the Royals do in the minors.  Mitch was sent down to Omaha earlier this month but has been recently recalled.  It’s good to see someone who hustles it to be back in the Majors.  (Really most of the Royals this year hustle it and don’t quit.)  Recently, I discovered the blog of one of the Royals minor leaguers- Chris Hayes and it’s been quite a funny little read. . . but another interesting look at life in the minors.

It’s safe to say that the Baseball still holds quite a place in my heart.  Of course, you have to be able to say that to be a Royals fan, now don’t you.  Now, if only I could figure out a way to see some more Royals games this year.

Losing A Person

Last week, I saw Star Jones on Oprah.  I can’t say that I really have a feeling for her one way or the other.  I don’t follow the view and don’t really go for celebrity.  But, for some reason I left it on. . .

She had lap band (or other similar procedure. . . If you follow tabloids, celebrity news, etc you probably know which one) and she lost a lot of weight.   I’ve seen her before and the result is pretty dramatic.  During the course of the interview, she talked about what losing a whole other person did for her. . . you could tell it wasn’t just physically losing another person but also losing that person inside (to some extent) that she used to be.  She also reflected on finding who she is now.

When she said it, I realized that’s a lot like what I’m going through as we’ve stopped our pursuit of kids.  You see I always thought of myself as a mother even though I knew it might be difficult.  Like most little girls, I played house all the time as a child.  The only time I ever really didn’t think I’d be a mother was the when my TMJ headaches (which we didn’t know what was causing them at the time) were so bad before Cody and I got serious.  The more Cody and I dated though the more I could see myself with kids once again.  In fact, I changed my major and the course of my career because I wanted to be able to spend life around my kids and Cody.

Now, the course of my life is changing again.  That mother isn’t to be.  I’ve lost at least one whole side of me.  But as mother’s will tell you, motherhood is interwoven with nearly every aspect of your life.  It’s very much like I’m losing an entire person.

Our trip to Kansas City brought much of the very needed peace I needed.  These days I’m focusing on who I am now. . . what I enjoy and what I might like to fill the time on my hands doing.  I’ve wanted something more for a long time and now I know that motherhood isn’t it.  So, I need to figure out what that something more may be.  And, I’m giving myself time to just be and to explore.

And I wonder who I’ll be a few years from now- now that I’ve lost this other person and am finding out who I am without that other person.  But, I plan on giving myself the time to find that out.

Summer Vacation: Houston Way

Ok, before I tell you about our last ball game, a funny bit about our way home.  So, we didn’t want Jack to know we were just 2-3 hours from home when we stopped at Corsicana in the middle of the night.  I told Jack that he could wake me up at 6:00 if he was awake.  6:00 on the dot I was gently being shaken awake along with a quiet, “Amy, Aunt Amy”.  He would later tell me he was up at 4:00, 4:30, 5:00, 5:30 and that finally it was 6:00.  He wanted to get home and he thought we had about five hours to go.

So, we get less than 30-45 minutes from his house, he calls his Pa-Pa and tells him where we are. . . then tells him we have 2-3 hours to go.  LOL!  I know his Pa-Pa thought he must have been crazy.  15 minutes later we were passing the place he had his birthday part several years ago.  He didn’t believe me when I told him we were getting close and said we still had a few hours to go.  I told him that the Incredible Pizza where we’d gone to his birthday party was coming up on the right and he still didn’t believe me.  It wasn’t until after he actually saw it that he began to recognize where we were.

That evening, Tuesday, the Royals were playing in Houston after a day off.  Wouldn’t have been nice to catch the team plane to Houston, right?

It was a chance for us to watch one more game but share it with him mom- who being from Houston found herself suddenly conflicted with whether to root for the Astors or the Royals- since she was now face to face with the three of us rooting against the local team.

We had some great seats and it was lots of fun to be close- just seven rows up from the third base line.  Zack was pitching and we were hoping to see our losing streak come to a close.

It was really close and we got to see Soria come for Zack in the 9th. . . The Astros got some baserunners and I knew Jack was going to be crushed if the Royals didn’t win after they’d been in the lead for most of the game.

In the end, the ROYALS WON!  We were happy campers and held our heads high as we walked out of Minute Maid in our Royals gear.

Wednesday, we said our goodbye’s and headed home.  It turned out we needed the days to catch up on the mounds of laundry and the rest we needed.

The Royals would go on to win the series after winning when we got home.

Summer Vacation: Oklahoma Again- Southbound to Texas

When we came home from Kansas City, we decided to drive south through Missouri and then take the Will Rogers Turnpike back to OKC and then take the same route the rest of the way home.

This was strategic.  Because Jack had enjoyed the Round Barn so much we wanted to stop by the Blue Whale- another iconic stop on Route 66.  We knew from experience that we didn’t have the time to enjoy Route 66 from Joplin to OKC but that we could get off the interstate for a short trip to the Blue Whale.

It also meant that I could stay in Missouri a little longer- a drive that Cody and I both enjoy.  But, after we got to Joplin, the drive, honestly, got much harder on me.  I could watch the interstate mile markers clicking down to the end of my time in Missouri- I hated crossing that state line.

We ate at the McDonald’s over the Will Rogers Turnpike. . . I didn’t take any pics then but I still have some from our last trip:

wpid893-20090108-8424.jpg

(Jack reminded me while we were eating that he’d seen the pictures.)

The AC was out inside the McD’s and so after we’d eaten most of our meal, we headed out.  Jack had what was left of his meal.

Next, of course, we stopped at the Blue Whale.

wpid768-20090622-dsc-4575asj.jpg

We left another disposable camera on one of the benches just as Cody and I did in January.  We still haven’t had this one returned but it took a while before we got the other one back- so we’ll see what happens.

wpid776-20090622-dsc-4594asj.jpg

The boys hurried out onto the blue whale while I took pictures and took my time. . .  What are they looking at you might ask?  I wondered the same thing.  The next thing I knew they were going back out to the truck. . . To get leftover french fries to feed the fish. . .

wpid770-20090622-dsc-4585asj.jpg

wpid772-20090622-dsc-4591asj.jpg

wpid774-20090622-dsc-4592asj.jpg

After the boys gave the fish heart disease (as they put it)- who knew the fish would love cold french fries like they did?- we loaded back up, got gas and ice, and drove down to Turner Falls.

We stopped at Turner Falls.  I tried to take the guys into putting their swimsuits on but they weren’t having it.  It was warm and the water was so pretty.  I wanted to at least get my feet wet, so I left the camera in the truck and just took in one of my favorite places in Oklahoma.  We skipped rocks.  I spent some time just sitting out on a rock with my feet in the water.  The boys split a stick, threw them in the water, and “raced” them down the creek.  The sticks got stuck- Cody’s stayed stuck and Jack’s finally wiggled loose.  It made it way down teh creek.  I could tell Jack was having fun and really watching that stick.  I decided that he needed to go home with that stick.  I watched where it was going.. . of course it was on the other side of the water.  I walked across the creek with my skirt up just as high as it could go- the bottom got a bit wet but if the water had gotten any deeper, I would have just had to get wet- literlly couldn’t lift the skirt any higher without giving a show I’m not getting.  I had my crocs on so and there was a perfect bed to walk in without getting in the slippery stuff.  But, I got his stick.  When I got back he said I didn’t have to do that.  I told him I knew but that I wanted him to have it.  (It was one of the first things he took out of the truck when we got back to his house too!)

We stopped and ate in Ardmore and then set our sights on the Texas Border.  Jack reminded me so much of myself as a child.  I’d forgotten just what that border meant to me as a child.  Even as an adult there’s something about getting back within the Texas state line, but as a kid it feels like you’re leaving a foreign country and getting back to your native land.  Before we knew it, we heard Jack saying, “Hello, Texas Driver. Hello Texas Grass. Hello Texas Road.”

We knew we couldn’t make it all the way to back to Jack’s house just north of Houston despite how much Jack wanted to be there.  We agreed that we would try to get to Dallas area.  Cody actually made it all the way to Corsicana.  We might could have made it the whole way but we didn’t want to push it. . . we had precious cargo with us.

One Way Conversations

So, I’ve talked about my nephew Jack and his texting and how I feel about kids his age having cell phones.  I know he hasn’t read my blog or that post, but to look at my texting thread with him on my phone, you’d think he read and was mad at me.  But, he would just tell you that it’s becuase his phone isn’t as fancy as ours and he has to hit the number pad to send texts.

I like to send him a text every once in a while just to let him know I’m thinking of him.  He almost never texts me back.  Just the other night, I sent him a text to telling him that Billy Butler hit a home run to put the Royals in the lead- and that I love him.

Sometimes, it would be nice just to get an “Love you too” but I know that I don’t do it to get love back but rather just to express my love to him.  So, my text thread with him is evidence of my little one way conversation with him.

Summer Vacation: Royals Baseball Edition

Well, of course, once we got to Kansas City we met our destination- the very thing that started this trip- Kaufman Stadium and the Kansas City Royals.

In fact, it was the first ground we stepped onto in Missouri.  We hurried to the stadium to go on the last ballpark tour of the day.  It was so cool to see the behind the scenes and all the renovations up close.  We’d seen all the renovations on TV and they looked even better in person.  We got to hear some of the Royals history.  Jack and I really enjoyed going into the dugout and stepping onto the field.  (Jack’s eyes were so big when we stepped into the dugout and onto the field. . . he loved it.)  We even got to see John Buck, Coco Crisp, and Brayan Pena arriving at the ballpark.

We then made our first shopping trip at the Team Store.  I got a jersey and T-shirt.  Jack got a jersey, a foam finger, and souvenirs.  More on that jersey and the foam finger coming your way soon!

Wednesday’s Game: Royals and Diamondbacks

For our first game, we had unlimited use of the new outfield experience.  So, the guys tried their hand at running to first base, and Jack pitched and batted.

Zack was on the mound and we were excited to see him pitch in person.  That also meant the crowd was out. . . and it was college night.  If I’d known where our seats were- right above a railing- I would have brought Z’s with me to put out like K’s.  He pitched well striking out 9 batters.

wpid691-20090617-dsc-3955asj.jpg

We had one ball come our way. . . Cody didn’t see it coming and didn’t catch it.  It bounced and hit him in the butt just on the other side of Jack and I.  Jack and I were just glad he was ok and that it hadn’t hit the camera bag like we thought it had.  Cody on the other hand still beats himself up about not catching it.

Unfortunately, the game got ugly as it progressed further.  Everyone of course started leaving early.  Jack stayed in the game but, for a while, gave up hope and wanted to leave.  We explained that going back to the hotel was not an option- you always stay because you never know what might happen.  At least in the bottom of the 9th, the Royals started to show him exactly why that is.

After the game, we headed out to the parking lot.  Jack wanted to play catch.  So we waited for it to clear out and found a spot free from landmines (AKA broken beer bottles) and the boys played catch for an hour and half in the parking lot.  We watched the Diamondbacks bus driving back to the hotel.

The Jersey

Every night, when we got back to the hotel, I washed Jack’s Zack jersey in the sink of the hotel and hang drying it in the bathroom.  It was a nightly ritual because he wanted to wear it the next day.  All I can say is that I love that kid.

Thursday’s Game: Royals and Diamondbacks, Round 2 (or 3 for the Series)

Each day we would arrive the customary 1.5 hours before the game started.  Thursday’s seats were much closer and we really enjoyed them.

Unfortunately, the game didn’t go any better.  Perhaps worse- the score was the same but the game got uglier faster.  But we endured- We were in Kansas City and we were watching the game.  Jack helped me keep up with my scorecard.  Despite the way the game went, we were all in the game to the very end.

It was in the 9th that we saw David DeJesus get a triple.  Jack and I talked about how the team, and David, hadn’t given up.  The foam finger that Jack got was waving high!

wpid711-20090618-dsc-4330asj.jpg

wpid713-20090618-dsc-4335asj.jpg

We went over to the player parking area where Jack got autographs.  Jack got the autographs of Brayan Pena, John Bale, Tony Pena, Jr, Mike Jacobs, Billy Butler, and David DeJesus.  It was really pretty cool that even after watching two disappointing losses and the players enduring those games, he was able to get their signature.  Mike Jacobs walked his wife and twins to the car then came back out to give autographs.  David and Billy pulled out of the parking area about the same time and both pulled over to the side so that the kids (and a few adults) could get autographs.  That left a permanent impression on Jack- especially because DeJesus had his trademark smile.  We know had a Billy Butler and David DeJesus fan. . . with a Zack Jersey.

And we again saw the Diamondback’s bus leave.

Friday Night’s Game: The Cardinals came to Town.

OK, so from our personal knowledge, they arrived early Friday morning. . . And who knows when all their fans arrived.  It was the I-70 series and all three games were packed.  We were sitting in the outfield and rain was a slight possibility.  I didn’t bring my camera.

Before the game, we searched every team store on the premises that we could get to. . . to find a DeJesus T-Shirt for Jack.  We finally found one.  And, I got a hat.

But, the Cardinals, as we would see over and over, proved too much for the Royals.  We watched them lose again.  The Cardinals had brought fireworks of their own- didn’t they know the Royals had the fireworks following the game under control?  The Royals starting pitcher was sent to Triple A after this game. . .

And Billy and David, the ones who had made such an impression on Jack the night before- they both homered!

After the game, the boys threw the ball for another few hours.  This time on the sidewalk outside the stadium.  We could see players leaving (we know knew their vehicle) and we again watched the visitor’s bus head back to our hotel long before we ever left.

I did get Jack’s camera out and snapped a few pictures- of course, his camera doesn’t deal with low light very well.  But the shots still capture the moments in time.

Saturday’s “Day” Game: Cardinals and Royals and the Weather

Saturday, the chance of rain was even greater.  And this time, it really did rain.  We sat in the stands until the rains were just to hard retreating to the concourse.  Of course, this was the game we were on the upper level.  We thought perhaps we’d be eligible for the seat upgrades they did nightly from the upper level.  One of the Royals crew even asked us how many (Cody and I are guessing we needed 4 instead of 3- should have lied.)  It was the first time I got to see them mess with a tarp in person. . . I after all grew up going to games in the Astrodome.  It was a first for all of us really and it was just after one gal got stuck in one at someone else’s game- the video was plastered all over ESPN.

(Jack did have his camera with him.)

So this game got started later.  Billy Butler and Zack Grienke were honored as Players of the Month.

It looked like we might actually have a shot. . . but then it was another blowout.

Afterwards, the boys would play catch outside in the same area we had previously.  I took out Jack’s little camera again.  They played catch for hours- literally.  It was nearly dark and about 9:00 before we even left the ball park (And consequently, we wound up being those parents who we tend to judge- we had Jack out eating at 11 at night.)

The rain had brought cooler temps and it was a perfect evening.  I sat there just enjoying being in KC and at the beautiful ball park.  We all hated to see the evening end.

Sunday: The Royals and Cardinals and A Different Kind of Weather

wpid727-20090621-dsc-4375asj.jpg

So, we had one more chance in KC to see the Royals win.  The second day game this one was much hotter.  And so were the Royals, initially.  David DeJesus had hit a home run and it looked like we somehow had a chance.

wpid731-20090621-dsc-4432asj.jpg

It was hot and we were melting.  We’d been through three or four waters but we were in the game tight game- For three innings. . .

Then it broke lose.  By the bottom of the fifth we’d taken reprieve from our seats in the hot sunshine first in the concourse, then in the Team Store where the AC was trying to keep up.  We left the game early.  Something I’ve never done. . . part of me- my heart- regrets it but my brain knows there’s just no way we could have withstood the heat any longer.

Ironically, the score was the same as the first two games.  But, by now, we’d already bought our tickets just 7 rows up from the field in Houston to see the Royals next game- in Houston.

The Oklahoma City Zoo: Bears Revisited

So, my friend online friend Debby shared a video she had on you tube of the same bears that Cody, Jack, and I marveled over at the Oklahoma City Zoo.   She’d seen our pictures while reading my blog.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAPzt2SiFCE

She also mentioned how scary the fence could be and how she worried about kids falling over.  You know, I hadn’t thought about it at the time, but it would be pretty easy.  That’s when I started thinking all those things I would have worried about if Jack were younger that I didn’t even think about on this trip.  (Don’t get me wrong, I worried plenty about the kid as I always do. . . )

I can’t wait to check out the rest of her videos on youtube.

Summer Vacation: Kansas City Sights

So, I promise, I’ll keep KC to two posts. I’ll save Kaufman Stadium for the next post though it dominated the time we were there.

Where did we stay?
I was able to get a good rate using hotwire for a four-star in the Plaza area. . . I chose four star because I knew there were only two in the area- right next two each other. With hotwire, of course, you can’t see what hotel you are staying in. While I was hoping that it would be the Raphael where we stayed in January, it was actually the Intercontinental that we stayed at. Jack loved that the hotel had so many floors- everywhere we stayed he wanted the top floor. We got to explain that here there was no way we would get the top floor here- that was different in this type of hotel. But, he was happy with the 9th floor.

Hotel Memories-
1) We stayed in the hotel that both the Diamondbacks and Cardinals stayed in. It was interesting to consider the logistics of player travel as you saw all the luggage outside. We got a tip that the Cardinals would be coming in Thursday night. So, after we got back from the game, we stayed up and sat on teh bench outside. . as they arrived about 2 AM in the morning.
2) The hotel had these big round bolster pillows. I mean like 4ft in length and 1.5 ft in diameter. Each bed had one. So, what do boys do with them? You guessed it. . . Jack and Cody beat each other up with them every night. . . 11 or 12 o’clock at night. Each hit came with a loud ka-thud that I knew was going to get us kicked out for making too much noise.
3) We never had the heart to mess up the animal they made out of the towels.
4) We had a small balcony and it worked perfectly for watching Jack and Cody play catch down by the pool.

Where did we venture off to?

Two days we did venture away from the Plaza area and beyond the confines of the Sports Complex. The first day we were off to Crown Center, the Hallmark Visitors Center, and Kaleidescope. We had nachos and quesadillas for breakfast and I was sorry that I broke my rule of no Mexican food outside the state lines of Texas. We all enjoyed the lego exhibit that they had. Kaleidescope was a total bust. . . Jack has just gotten too old for that. We got to see a demonstration of how cards were made etc at the Hallmark Visitor’s Center which I’ve never seen. Did you know that the buttons and bows and other embellishments like that are put on by hand?

wpid701-20090618-dsc-4040asj.jpg

The other day we went to the Negros League Baseball Museum down in the historic 18th and Vine district. (In it’s heyday the home for Kansas City Jazz.) Unfortunately, pictures weren’t allowed in the museum. I would have loved to have taken pictures. It was something that Cody and I would like to go back and see. It just wasn’t geared towards kids enough for Jack. But, as we talked later, I could tell he got the history lesson that I wanted him to get.

What about the Plaza?

You know we spent time there. I got up in the mornings and walked to Panera to get cinnamon rolls and just window shop. I did do a little shopping but not much. We ate Cheesecake Factory twice! Jack really enjoyed his cheesecake. Sunday evening, we took in all of the Plaza. We ate at the Melting Pot where Jack thought it was cool to cook his own shrimp. We walked the Plaza taking in the statues, fountains, and architecture. The boys agreed to behave so that I could enjoy our walk. It was fun to watch Jack as he ranges in and out of what the teen years bring. Of course, we told him he had to rub the boar’s nose- it’s just what you do in the Plaza. But, he also enjoyed interacting with the other statues.

One thing is for sure, we wore ourselves out. . . . (And the evil Aunt Amy took the pictures to prove it!)

I might said I would to limit my KC posts. . . but I didn’t promise to keep ‘em short.  But, it seemed our time in KC was just too short- but then, for me, it always is too short.

Summer Vacation: More Coming I Promise

wpid689-20090617-dsc-3946asj.jpg

I know, I know, I’ve left you hanging out in Kansas with “the mean old lady”. I promise that I’ll be back soon and we can spend some time enjoying Kansas City, Missouri together. Then meander on back through Oklahoma.

Plus of course, I have other things I want to talk about. I just haven’t had the time lately. . . plus we’ve had lots of storms that have kept us off the computers.

For now, please join me in hoping that tomorrow these guys pull a few wins out of the air while they are playing the Rangers. Surely, 9 in a row won’t become 12 in a row.

Summer Vacation: Kansas

From Oklahoma, we drove to Wichita.  Wichita was one of our great destinations.  But, before we could get to the great, we made a memory I think we all could have done without.

After we checked into the hotel, we started out ot go eat.  Only, we went the wrong direction and had to turn around.  Cody pulled down a side street and then into a driveway- just barely- to turn around and right the ship.  Well, the driveway belonged to some lady who was mowing her yard.  She started yelling.  We couldn’t hear her but we could all read her lips.  It wasn’t pretty.   I nearly had to hold onto the seat to keep from getting out to ream out the lady.  If it had been just Cody and I, it would have been easy to laugh it off.  But, it wasn’t.  And Jack could read her lips just as clear as we could.

Then, as we pulled around the corner, she gave us the bird.  Cody and I missed it.  But, guess who saw it!  That’s right.  I’m so thankful that Cody didn’t turn the truck around- that lady was much bigger than I was.

Why must people be like that?  Jack’s memories of our road trip include the mean old lady in Kansas.  (Truth be told she wasn’t old but that’s they way he tells it.)  We tried to explain that maybe she just wasn’t having a good day but he was convinced she was mean.  And truth be told, if you act that way, perhaps you are mean.

Thankfully, the rest of the night, even though there are no pictures, was a perfect night.  We went to eat at Jimmie’s Diner.  Where we stopped several times growing up.  Jack and I had shakes and breakfast for dinner.  (Chocolate Shake and Omelets for me- yumm!  What a combination).  I loved it.  In fac,t I had my shake and the shaker full long before breakfast ever arrived.  We played “Going to Kansas City” , “Wild Thing”, and “Mr. Sandman” on the jukebox from right there at our table.  (I emailed me dad and texted my brother just to make them jealous).  It was a moment when I really appreciated the memories made when I was younger.

Following Dinner, we went to see “Up”- But it wasn’t the movie that made the night.  It was the drive-in theater experience that came along with the movie.  The weather cooled off and there was the perfect breeze flowing through the truck as we sat and watched the movie.  There was the giant popcorn that wasn’t meant to be squished into the middle front seat and that spilled popcorn on the floor.  I think it was our favorite thing we did on this trip.

The drive-in was the reason we stopped in Wichita- it’s open 7 days a week which meant we could fit it in.  Jimmie’s was just a special treat since we were there.  And, of course, I don’t have any pictures from either Jimmie’s or the Drive-In.

Summer Vacation: Northbound Oklahoma Edition

Last month, Cody and I picked up my nephew in Houston and headed North for a vacation.  We had a great time and I’m going to be taking several posts to share lots of pictures and a little bit of the things we did and saw on our trip.

So many times, when you’re trying to get out of a big state like Texas, you just can’t wait to get to the next state. . . to cross the stateline into your new adventure.  And, I always love the drive through Oklahoma on Interstate 35.  It was one of the blessings of traveling to Houston  was that we had every reason to take Interstate 35 through Oklahoma.

It’s a drive that I remember greatly from my childhood.  There’s stretch after stretch as you drive through the Southern part that look like this.  The rock on either side of the road is etched in my memory.

Arbuckle Mountain Interstate

It’s the Arbuckle Mountains and they are really pretty.  They may not be the huge mountains you see in the Rockies or Smoky Mountains, but these little mountains make for a spectacular view.

Arbuckle Landscape

Our first real stop of the road trip was Cody and I’s favorite stop in Oklahoma- Turner Falls.  But, this time, it was packed and hot.  We stopped at the look out and then climbed down the side of the mountain from the top of the falls to the bottom.

It was time to get back into the truck and drive a little further North to the Oklahoma City area where we had planned to stay the night.  We actually stayed in Edmond on Route 66.

Jack loves to get glass bottled Dr. Peppers when he’s up here.  (He thinks that the Convenience store near the deer lease is one of the few places that sell them.)  So, it was only natural that we stopped in at Pop’s where we got dinner.

Route 66: Pops

We decided that we’d stay two nights there in OKC.  So, the next day we thought we would go the Zoo and then the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum.  Boy were we wrong!  That zoo there in OKC is HUGE!  We were there for six hours.  We saw about 75% of the zoo.  And that was only because we rode a tram for half of it.  There were some really cool things at the zoo though.

Oklahoma City Zoo: Jack

It was also one of those times when I was really glad we’d bought Jack a cmaera for his Birthday last year.

Oklahoma City Zoo: Seal

Oklahoma CIty Zoo: Giraffe and Zebra

We enjoyed the reptiles (well I enjoyed the lizards not the snakes), the meercats, the nocturnal barn, and these bears were the coolest.  Usually, when you go to the zoo in the summer, you’ve got little chance of seeing bears and especially of them doing anything.  But, this zoo had a great water area for them.  We watched the two bears forever watching them play or fight- we weren’t quite sure just how friendly they were actually being.

Oklahoma City Zoo: The Bears

Oklahoma City Zoo: Bear Fight

We called it a night.  And for the second night in a row, we made full use of the indoor pool.  But, we were so tired that we just ordered Pizza.

So, the next morning, we were left with our two priority places.  Jack, unfortunately, was not in the best of moods and only enjoyed a small part of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum.

This is one of the statues he enjoyed.  He also enjoyed one of the Juried statues of a dog- but pictures are only allowed in a small portion of the museum.

National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum: Big Cat

This statue remains one of my favorite just as it was the first time I saw it over 15 years ago.

National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Museum: Horses

We were down to just one more stop before we drove north to Wichita.  The Round Barn on Route 66.   Given Jack’s mood we were sure he’d hate it.  But, I knew that he had been very interested in our trip through Route 66 last January.  And, we were hoping that he could meet the man who told us the history of the Round Barn.  When that man wasn’t there, Cody and I were sure that he’d hate the place.  We walked around and Jack decided he wanted a Route 66 pillow.  I wondered why.  It wasn’t until we were upstairs that Cody and I realized Jack thought the old Round Barn was cool.

The Round Barn

And we loaded back into the truck where Cody and I enjoyed the ride to Wichita, Kansas while Jack slept.  He’s just like his mom. . . he can’t stay awake while riding.

On the Road Again

wpid643-20090711-dsc-5066.jpg

I can really wait to get on the road again. . . .

From home to Houston to Davis to Oklahoma City to Wichita to Kansas City to Will Roger’s Turnpike to Claremore to Davis to Corsicana to Houston to Home. . . home. . . home. . . home. . . to Port Arthur to home (12 hours) to Corpus Christi to home.

HOME!  So glad to be home with no trips planned for a while.  We got back from vacation two and a half weeks ago.  Returned to work two weeks ago and learned that I’d be going out of town the next.  So this week I went to Port Arthur but came back only in time to sleep in my own bed and go to back out on the road to Corpus Christi to see my mother-in-law.

I’m finally getting trip pictures uploaded here so I can share.

This picture happens to be one I took in Corpus Christi.  My mother-in-law lives about 10 miles from the coast and I really didn’t expect to see the water this trip since we were going down there post neck surgery for her.  But, Cody and I went on a wild goose chase and then made the most of it.  Not only did I get to see the water, I got to walk in the sand and get salt water on me.  We stopped at the seawall and then walked ot on one of the jetty/ surge breaks.  It was something we’d never done.  And despite there being quite a few people down there it was quite enjoyable.  (and hot! and sticky! )

And I did not jump on the seawall and sing Corpus Christi Bay!  But, I joked with Cody about doing it.  I was afraid he’d leave me there though.
