Glad He Was Awake Too!

I woke up this morning sometime around 3:00.  I knew Cody would be getting up in an hour or so since he had to be at work early.  I wanted to catch some more sleep- so I got up to go to the bathroom and settled back into bed.  I guess I woke Cody up when I got up and he wrapped his arm around me.

Then, it happened.  Another something I never thought I would experience in East Texas.  First, it sounded like Cody had hit hsi dresser.  But I knew he was right next to me.  Next, the bed began to move.  Cody asked if I was alright, wondering if I was moving.  I was wondering if he was moving.  Then, Cody had the where-with-all to realize it must have been an Earthquake.

This wouldn’t normally be any one’s thought around here.  Last week though, there was a 3.7 magnitude earthquake around 20 miles north of our old house.  We were at work at the time and didn’t feel it.  So, Cody was able to put the pieces together and we assumed that was what it was.

Less than 30 minutes later, he was texting with one of his co-workers- confirming it was an earthquake. . . three of his other co-workers were awake as well.  I can’t believe it was felt in San Augustine County but then again, it makes sense.  I began to wonder just how many people were out there texting.  It was a 4.3 magnitude “after shock” in the same location as the last week’s.  Do you call it an aftershock if it’s stronger than the initial one?  How would I know? I live in East Texas.

We couldn’t help but think back to when the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.  That shook the house much harder than this shook the apartment.  But, I remember wondering what it would have been like if we texted then.  We had to wait until the news broke nationally to figure out what happened.  And, yet, this morning, it was minutes- even though it was very early in the morning.  I thought about the Ham Radio club that was instrumental in our past disasters- and how in this case, text was working much the same way.

Just about the time the texting stopped, Cody’s alarm went off.  And then mine.  Not much use sleeping. But, I was just glad he was awake when the earthquake hit.  Because, he would have thought I was nuts describing it if he’d have been asleep when it happened.  Of course, if we’d both been asleep, I don’t think we’d have even noticed it. But it was strange thinking that we were both laying there still but the bed was moving. . .

Ah, another thing I never thought I’d experience here.
