Tell a Story Inside Another Story

One of the things that I do when I start to tell a story, especially as I think about journaling on my scrapbook page, is to think about back stories or stories I can link to other stories.  I’ll tell you that it’s the pages where I can thread stories together like this that are often instant favorites of mine.

Threading stories together tells a much more complete story.  Each story, each part of our history, builds upon itself.  Often thinking about those stories can lead to an interesting way to say what’s on your mind.

Those Unflattering Images Tell A Story Too

Today, as I was browsing through my scrapbook pages on my iPad, I thought about the unflattering images of me that I saw.

It’s true, like most women (and probably men too), I really don’t like having my picture taken and I don’t feel that I’m at all photogenic. (For proof- just ask my brother to share all his less than stellar images of his sister- he’d gladly share them with you just to get back at me, I’m sure.)  I could spend hours lamenting why that is.  But why waste my time?

Of course, the storyteller in me longs for evidence that I lived this life and that means images of me. When I’m really enjoying a moment or seeing a special thing evolve, I’ll ask someone (usually Cody) to take a picture of me doing whatever it is that seems like I need a shot of- like that image of Amy Lynn sleeping on my lap after her birthday party. Or this moment when my mother and I were teaching my uncle to make their mother’s pie crust- it was such a poignant moment that I don’t ever want to forget that I was there.

Cards and More Cards

Just a quick post today to share some more of the cards that I sent out in March. I’m working on making May cards but I’ll share last Monty’s card making later.

Sharing Cards

I’ve been busy this year making birthday cards.  One of the things that continues to surprise me is the number of people that have thanked me for sending them a card.  You know, I think that in this day and age where we communicate online and cell phones instead of sending letters and cards, I think we miss the tactile nature of receiving mail- perhaps that’s why getting a package delivered is so fun.

Here’s just some of the ones that I made and sent in March.

Embracing the Geeky Dork

lr52

The big news around here. . . . It’s totally geeky.  (In part, because Turkey Season hasn’t been too exciting yet).  Here’s the big news around here: Lightroom 5 Beta is out.  And not only is LR5 out, but it will support .png files.  And, not only is LR5 out and supporting .png files, it reads my bridge cache.  What does that mean? I know many of you are thinking” oh goodness”.  For most it sounds like a whole other language, right?  What it means for me is that I’ll be able to organize my supplies in Lightroom which is such a great organizer without going back to do a bunch of keywording.  It means scrapbooking will be faster.

In the past year or so, I’ve been embracing the fact that I’m a geek.  I often fill the role of tech support at work- and even around DH’s office as well.  I really don’t remember not having a computer- not so much an age thing as most of my generation didn’t have home computers when I did.  I wrote programs as a child, had an Astros batting stats database as a teenager, and today, I scrapbook on the computer.  It’s no wonder that I’m a techie. I love pillows that say Ctrl, Alt, and Del or signs that say Keep Calm and Ctrl Z and have seriously thought about incorporating them into my decor.  It’s simply a part of who I am and I’ve been embracing that moniker.

How much time do we really spend embracing who we are? I’ve been working to embrace other parts of who I am lately.  How can I integrate all those parts?

Scrapbooking with the Big Picture Gang of Texans

One of the things I’ve done this year that I realize I’ve not shared here on the blog has been such a fun blessing in my life.  Twice now several of us from Texas that take classes together at Big Picture Classes have met up at a scrapbooking store and retreat in Corsicana.  I can’t tell you how much fun it is! We laugh so much!  And, I’ve never gotten the chance to scrapbooking with others in person.  So far, when we get together, I’m the only sole digital scrapbooker but these gals make me feel so much a part of them and I find I’m super them- I’ve seen their influences in my pages.

Here’s a group shot of all of us from September:

In May, I just kinda did my thing as I normally would.  We had a great time. I really didn’t want to leave but I wanted to be there for Senior Day and the last home SFA baseball game, so I came home early.

This layout is actually a bit of a re-do of my first ever layout.  The the top picture and script font were the original layout- my first ever.  But, I really didn’t tell the story.  I wanted to create something where I told the full story without really re-doing the original.

In September, I did things differently.  I had page ideas in mind.  I had gathered the pictures and potential supplies for them in one place so that I could put the pages together.  And, I stayed for the entire weekend- I had so much fun in May there was no way I was going to miss this fun.  And I got a ton of pages done including two layouts that will be some swinging shutter pages.

Here is the first of the two swining shutter layouts that I completed.  These two sets of layouts took hours and hours but are so worth it.  Each will have two flaps on top of the full size page- that swing out.  I had the 12 by 12 ones but the store owner also had 8.5 by 11, so I did one of those. (I just finished proofreading these finally and ordering them.  I’ll share images of what these look like in the page protectors after I get them.)

When closed, this is what the front will look like.  This will really be cut in half, so that it can open up to reveal the next image.

This will be what you see when you open it up- the two sides will be the backs of the two sides above.

And then this is the back of the layout.

Here is the other one that I did.  It’ll be the same as the one above in terms of structure only it’s 8.5 by 11.  This one is probably my favorite of the trip. . . I love what all these texts capture.

The super cool thing is the number of stories and the tidbits of our life that I was able to capture.  These layouts make me smile when I think about the moments I’ve captured.

I’ve updated my scrapbook  to show all my layouts that hadn’t been uploaded yet to the Newest Layouts so you can see these and a few others.  For most of them, if you click on them there, you’ll be able to read the journaling (with a few errors that were corrected prior to printing) .

Ordinary Defined: A Big Picture Classes Self Paced Project

I’m super excited to finally get to announce that I’m offering my first class at Big Picture Classes.  This class is totally our every day lives.  When the opportunity arrived to share this project as a class at Big Picture, I knew it would be perfect.    I love this way this project gives me a quick easy way to document little bits of every day life.  And the end result makes a great conversation piece.

Ordinary Defined

The class is a self paced project so I’ll be available via email and you we’ll be able to share our projects in the gallery.

Life in a Hashtag

Yesterday I received a writing prompt that was about what I was thinking.  Something I’ve spent a little bit of time lately thinking about is what my life might look like as a hashtag line.

Cody and I both have “Tweeter” (as Cody likes to call it) accounts but tweeting is not something that either of us do. We’re just followers who really have very little interest in twitter.  I’ve had my account for a while- there was a time you would get coupon codes to various scrapbook designers supplies through twitter.  So, I signed up and I follow a few on twitter.  But, then, I found that if you follow SFA Athletics feed, you can get updates during the baseball game- which has meant that Cody and I can follow the games and see what’s happening when we can’t be there.  Or, find out that Rene Moreda made Sportscenter’s Top 10 plays (awesome!).  From there we’ve started following various members of the team as well- which was really fun while we were playing in the conference tournament.  Now, I’ve got several summer collegiate ball clubs that I’m following as well.  Twitter for us is all about keeping up with our baseball! #baseballofcourse

I can’t say that I “get” the whole Twitter thing.  For me, it’s just another news source.  But, at times, I really enjoy seeing some of the hashtags that are used (other times, not so much, of course.) One of the posts I read recently was about it being hot on the bus. . . and the hash tag was “#canwegetsomeAC”.  It started to capture my imagination.  I haven’t looked, though I know I can, but I wonder who else has used that hash tag.  I can just see some folks on a vacation trip across country in the back seat that are hot- or at least that’s how some of our childhood trips were.  Or perhaps someone in their office when the AC is out.  That hashtag could be used by so many people. #overactiveimagination

Here’s a few other interesting ones I’ve read:

  • #nevergetsold
  • #anticipation
  • #dynamicduo
  • #wegetit
  • #herewego
  • #justlikehome

So, what common sayings like can we get some AC have you said that you that have probably been said somewhere else in the past hour?  What never gets old? What are you anticipating? How would you sum up your life at this moment in a hashtag? #storyideas

I’ve not yet started thinking up hashtags as I go through my day but it sounds like a fun exercise.  Cody and I will be taking a roadtrip to Tyler soon and I think I might make this a creative exercise for the trip. #cargames

December Daily- December 1st

It’s time again.  I enjoyed this project so much last year that despite life’s chaos right now, I’m going for it again.  It brought so much to the holiday season last year.  I knew I needed to keep it simple so I created a basic design to be printed at home on 4X6 photo paper.  This year is all about making these simple for me.

I don’t have real internet access these days (hoping that changes next week, she says crossing her fingers), so me and my cell may get behind in posting these.  And these probably won’t be the normal quality images- I’ll be sure to post those when we get internet and update my layouts gallery.  (You can see last year’s December Daily there or do a search here.) We also don’t have TV yet and I think that’s about to drive Cody crazy.

I also realize I haven’t shared the current chaos with you but this DD lets you in on some of it.

Inspired: My Craft Channel

A new website launched last week and I’m finding myself really it.  I’ve learned a number of things and now have several projects floating around in my head.  The site is called My Craft Channel (www.mycraftchannel.com).  Each weekday, there’s about thirty minutes of video- two different segments and a tip.  Topics include sewing, baking/party throwing, scrapbooking, jewelry making, photography, and more.

I caught my first one on Tuesday- the Books & Crafts with Ella Publishing.  Several scrapbook layouts came to mind as I watched- one of which is done and I’ll share it with you later this month.  since Tuesday, I’ve made the show a part of my day- Cody comes home to watch PTI on ESPN, I settle in to watch my craft shows.

I’m really looking forward to this new part of my daily routine.  Check it out!  (You can go back and watch previous episodes too!)

Saturday, I went to Hobby Lobby to get some scrapbook paper and glue to the Book Binding technique that Heidi Swapp showed on her Create to Remember show.

Here’s the results:

This first book, I added calendars to- just printed some from Patti Knox/ Designer Digitals.  I still plan to add some embellishments I’ll print from my digital supplies but I need to get printer ink first.  I’m thinking I’ll use it for meal planning.

The second, I’ve no idea what I’ll do with it.  I wanted to play with the different size pages.  I did find it easier to line up edges by cutting them once adhered together- It would make things much easier to do them all after adhering them, I think.  This was a case of just wanting to commit an idea to memory by actually doing it.  I love the fun colors though.

I do wish I’d used something different for adhesive- Hobby Lobby didn’t have what Heidi used and I wasn’t entirely happy with what I did get.  I did use my corner cutter to round the corners and loved the finished look it gave me.

For directions, check the episode out here.

Reflective Snapshots and Reflective Scrapbooking are now Ordinary Details

So, I’ve been working to merge things together and thinking about some things I’d like to do in the future.  Add to that some thoughts I’ve had about life today and you get: Ordinary Details!

Reflective Snapshots and Reflective Scrapbooking will now be combined as Ordinary Details.

Being online for me has always been about sharing personal expression.  I’ve seen several phases in my sharing and I think the overall contributer to that is change and growth.  It’s interesting, to me, to see how we all find our way in life- especially our way online.

I’ll be blogging about the ordinary details of our every day life, making my hobbies a part of the ordinary, and, of course, my own personal thoughts about life- the joy of ordinary life.  I’m hoping I’ll be sharing some scrapbooking freebies, tutorials, and more soon.  I’m also wanting to share more recipes and ideas.

Now, if only I could finalize a design over here and get some pictures uploaded.  I’ve got stuff I want to record here on my blog.

A Week in the Life 2011

Late last month, I participated in documenting a week in my life. We were super busy finalizing a month and a half long project.  For me, that meant keeping it really simple.  I really love this project.  I loved seeing the differences from last year to this year.  I love getting to capture small tidbits that otherwise seem to get lost- like my love hate relationship with watching the X-games.  What can I say, I just love simply capturing every day life.

Title/Intro Page for 2011

A lot of my pages captured all the things we checked off our to do list.  This one also captured soemthing I’d forgotten how much I used to enjoy- sitting on the back porch reading and resting.

Monday seemed like a fitting day to reminisencse on the polka dotted sidewalk in our yard.  (Many moons ago it seems, Billy, Cody, and I could do nothing but laugh as it was raining while we were pouring the concrete sometime after about 10 PM)

Oh Tuesday- this one was not our typical date night for sure.

Loved the Ryan Bingham album I downloaded on Wednesday.

Oh my gosh the fork incident.  I could have filed this under the weird things I wonder category. . . .

Women really are smarter than men.  Our locks were determined to show Cody that it seems.

I was so glad to get to Saturday.  Cody was super glad to see his freedom to go on ride-a-longs return.

We’re All A Little Bit Crazy

I believe, no really, I know that all of us scrapbookers are just a little bit crazy. Not because we want to capture our memories. But we will go to “extreme” heights in order to do that.

Here’s case in point:

As a coach in Finding Photo Freedom, I’m doing blog posts for the class. I wrote today’s post about the importance of archiving. And then thought about the two things I would grab in case of fire etc- probably even before my pictures. My quilt that my best friend’s granny made me and my waffle iron. Literally, I’ve been known to put my waffle iron in our fireproof gun safe. I love it that much!

I realized I wasn’t sure if I even had pictures of my waffle iron. And if something did happen to it, I’d want to at least have a picture to remember it by. (And yes, I dread the day it stops working)

So, I set out to rectify that. I made my husband go to Wal-mart and get some buttermilk. So, I could make waffles. Not so I could eat them- but so I could shoot them with my camera. Of course, I did eat the waffle I made for dinner last night and will use the batter this morning for breakfast. I even purposefully over filled the waffle iron so that I could get it to overflow like I remember happening with mom’s when I was child.

The next thing I did as I thought about all the reasons it was so important was go ahead and make this page.

Journaling Reads:  This waffle iron is one of my two most prized physical possessions- seriously, It’s one of the first things I try to protect when a hurricane or wildfire comes our way and would be one of the first things I’d grab in a fire.  You see, it’s probably not replaceable.  It must be over 30 years old.  I got this waffle iron from Aunt Elta’s house- oh how I loved that house growing up.  I knew instantly I’d hit the jackpot when I found this waffle iron- it’s just like mom’s was.  I cringe at the thought of the day that will inevitably come. The day when it won’t work anymore, it’s given me a couple of scares and we’ve had to replace the cord several times.  I have so many memories wrapped up in this waffle iron.  Memories of mom making waffles and watching (and silently hoping for a disaster) when the batter would ooze over as a child.  Mom was good at that.  Her waffle iron gave up the ghost a long time ago but it was nowhere near as perfectly seasoned as this one.  It makes perfect waffles- all I have to do is whip up some homemade batter- never the powder mix.  Mom spoiled us that way and I’ve passed that down to my nephew who can whip up his own batter.  And of course, waffles always make a god dinner.  This waffle iron is so very precious to me.

Supplies: Ali Edwards- template, twill, label; Carina Gardner- ribbon and papers; Anna Aspens- stitching; Splendid Fins- “lace”

What crazy things have you done to capture a story?

Beloved Waffle Iron of Mine

Have I ever told you about my waffle maker. It’s more precious to me that you might imagine. Ask me what I would take if I had 5 minutes to save stuff out of my house and my waffle maker would be #1 or 2 on the list. Seriously, I’m a bit crazy about it and the quilt that my Lisa’s granny made me.  I’ve been known to put it in the fire-proof safe at times

This waffle iron is unlike most any other waffle iron- you’d be hard pressed to find one like it that works today.

Here’s I’ll let the layout do the talking.

I mentioned that I’ll be a coach in Finding Photo Freedom at Big Picture Classes.  If you’re interested in telling you’re story through words and photos, I highly recommend this class- especially for all scrapbookers.  You can read my posts about it here and here.  You can register for the online class here.

Joplin Support

I woke up Sunday with Missouri on my mind.  That’s when the inspiration for this layout about my Show-Me State nature hit me at 5:00 in the morning.  I nearly finished this layout before church and finished it when we got home.

Less than a few hours from when I finished that layout, Joplin was hit with a tornado that killed over 100 people and wiped out a good part of the town.  Cody and I typically go through Joplin on our way to Kansas City and one of the pictures in the landscape picture in this layout is from that drive.  The bridge featured in this layout was part of our Route 66 windings that went right through Joplin where part of the tornado caused damage.

My cousin helped inspire me to do my own part to try to help the tornado victims up there.  And, so, I’ve decided to donate proceeds from sales of my digital scrapbook supplies and created a digital kit that will be available throughout the summer will benefit Joplin.  You can read all about how I’m working those details out.  I’m also doing two digital scrapbook webinars today and tomorrow to kick it all off.  If you even just want to see how I put my layouts together, I encourage you to sign up for one or both- they’re free.  You can read about them and find the links to register for them.
